Closing words from the organisers

With great satisfaction we in the organising committee closed the conference at Baltic Beach Hotel in Jurmala. During the intensive days, about 130 people from 12 different countries networked, worked and learned together.  This was the red thread throughout the conference.  It is the key to create a more sustainable society within the Baltic Sea region. Working and learning together is one of the most challenging and rewarding methods to emphasise ESD and SD issues. Let’s continue to join forces to make it happen and let the outcomes from the conference bear wings.

As one of many outcomes from the 3 conference days we, together, defined 10 different concepts for action-projects. This is shown in the Pretzi online here.
For each action-project you also find the coaching panel’s comments as useful inputs for further developing the projects. To continue the “red thread” we will soon invite each contact person for the action-projects plus the coaching panel members to take part in the coming workshop on Inquiry Based Approach in Tallinn in April. The aim of the IBA workshop is to develop participants’ capacity to facilitate change processes involving different stakeholders in order to enable the projects to become successful.

As promised we also make available the presentations from the different workshop leaders here.

With these short words we would like to say “thank you so much”. It is thanks to your work and energy that the conference had such successful outcomes. Let’s enjoy the festive season and with joint efforts and new energy let’s continue our work for a more sustainable world, with specific emphasize on the Baltic Sea region, in the New Year.

The vision of the Baltic Sea Region ESD Network:

"A just society where empowered people collaborate and network to address their development challenges and find the approaches and solutions that meet their, but also other's needs in the region and elsewhere in the world. Future generation's need are also taken into account and understood within sustainable ecological boundaries."

Warm welcome from the Baltic Sea Region ESD Network (BRSESDN)

The idea of establishing an ESD network for the Baltic Sea Region was debated at the end of the conference “The Power of ESD” on 24-26 October 2012 in Visby, Sweden. A significant number of individuals and relevant organizations in the public and private domain in the countries of the Baltic Sea Region consider that multi-stakeholder networking across sectorial and national borders and among ESD practitioners, researchers and policy makers will create the necessary momentum for advancing ESD – and thus SD considerations and practices – in the region.

To achieve the BSRESDN’s vision the multi-stakeholder network is expected to go beyond institutional and geographical borders. It should encourage cooperation and interaction, joint learning and joint actions among ESD practitioners in educational institutions at different levels of the education system, practitioners in informal and non-formal settings and policy makers in public, private and civil society organisations. It is a broad target area but ESD is complex and needs to be addressed collaboratively, through joint learning, and across boundaries.

The partnership’s ambition is to expand the BSRESDN so that it will become a broad and inclusive network  with members from a variety of stakeholders working within the ESD sphere.

Currently, with funding from the NordPlus and many in-kind contributions, the network is supported by a one year project, which consists of organizing the 2014 Jurmala Conference and two professional development workshops in the year 2015.
